* tax-returns

User (aner) is filing US taxes for the first time at 33, via the IRS Streamlined Procedure (has accountants). Project dir: /home/aner/projects/non-tech/tax-returns. CLAUDE.md at project root documents how to work in this repo. See [[tax-returns/status]] for current progress and [[tax-returns/todos]] for the open task list — load both before resuming work.

** Architecture
Folder structure: tax-returns/<year>/<institution>/<file>.pdf. Source docs land in ~/Downloads first; organizing = copying (not moving), originals left in Downloads. Cross-institution whole-picture documents go in tax-returns/_Summaries/. A few non-institution documents (employer Form 106, accountant's own reference docs) sit loose at project root pending a filing-convention decision — see [[tax-returns/status]].

** Conventions
- Institution folder names use the English/common name (e.g. "Phoenix" not "הפניקס").
- Same-year docs with near-identical generic filenames are often DIFFERENT PRODUCTS (pension/life insurance/study fund), not duplicates — always open and check content, never assume dupes from filename alone. Rename copies to disambiguate, e.g. "- קרן פנסיה.pdf" / "- ביטוח חיים.pdf".
- Also verify the filename's year actually matches the document's content year, and that the institution matches expectations — both have been wrong at least once.
- Broker-summary "start date" fields (e.g. "תחילת ביטוח") have repeatedly turned out to be money-vintage dates carried over from a transfer, not the account-open date at that institution — always check the actual document's "מועד הצטרפות" field before concluding how far back an institution's own documents need to go.

** Gotchas
- User's surname changed over time in records: "לאופר ענר" (≤2017) → "זקוביץ/זקובר ענר" (2018+). Same person, ID 203340302.
- "דף פרטי הביטוח ונוסח פוליסה.pdf" in Downloads is Clal CAR insurance, unrelated — excluded. Clal is separately a real institution for a different product (life insurance) — don't conflate the two.
- poppler-utils (pdftotext/pdftoppm) not installed by default in this NixOS env; use `nix shell nixpkgs#poppler-utils` ephemerally when the Read tool's PDF renderer needs pdftoppm.

** Key Files
- _Summaries/ — cross-institution snapshot reports (e.g. broker aggregator reports covering all institutions at once)
- Root-level "Streamline ..." PDFs — accountant's Streamlined Procedure engagement letter, checklist, and items-to-bring list (not year/institution specific, not yet relocated)
